Dodge Center, Minn. (November 9, 2011) – McNeilus Companies, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company and a leading manufacturer of refuse truck bodies, unveiled its new Contender™ Series front loader refuse vehicle today, on opening day of the Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo. The Expo runs through November 10 at the Palais de Congrés de Montréal. The Contender is engineered to deliver a balanced combination of strength and durability to maximize payload capacity and productivity.“
The Contender front loader is the direct result of the customer input of refuse haulers from across North America, who desire a balance of strength, toughness and capacity to deliver optimum productivity and profits,” said Frank Nerenhausen, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president of the Commercial Group and McNeilus. “The Contender gives McNeilus the industry’s most complete line of front loaders to meet any hauler’s requirements, and the Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo is an excellent venue to introduce its capabilities.”
The Contender Series is available in a 13 cubic yard hopper size and a body capacity of 32, 36, 40, 43, or 45-cubic yards. Its evolutionary design delivers heavy-duty strength and durability, with proven components, innovative technologies and unmatched ease of maintenance.
Matt Walter, McNeilus director of refuse marketing and product management, adds, “We’ve zeroed in on the right set of features to meet the needs of a broad range of commercial haulers. The Contender hits the sweet spot between East Coast toughness and West Coast weight concerns.”
The hopper, hopper floor and ejector panel are lined with AR400 high-strength steel for added durability, while the rounded body floor is chiseled from AR200 steel with easily replaceable X-Wear chromium carbide shoes. An oversized body access door and ergonomic ladder make regular maintenance less strenuous.
The 10,000 lb. lift arm capacity provides enough strength and power to handle the toughest routes. The proven and proprietary Excalibre™ hydraulic cylinders are a patented system that features a 4.5-inch diameter design for superior packing performance. The cylinder housings are highlighted by a hardened steel scraper that removes cylinder rod dings and nicks before they have the opportunity to reach and damage the cylinder’s hydraulic seals, reducing the need for messy and expensive cylinder replacement.
Inside the cab, Command Zone™ Lo-Pro™ controls are integrated into the dash, and the backlit touchpad system provides smooth and simple operation, and the design reduces wiring inside the cab by more than 800 feet. An LCD screen is positioned directly in front of the driver and offers real time information on the vehicle’s productivity measurements. And the LCD screen offers an easy to use troubleshooting menu system to speed maintenance and repairs.
A lightweight canopy helps to protect the cab and keeps liquids away from the windshield and driver. And, to maximize productivity, the available residential front loader package, featuring a Currato system, quickly converts the Contender to an automated front loader.
The Contender front loader is available in any Class 8 Cab Over Engine (COE) chassis configuration, with either diesel or compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled engines. McNeilus Next Generation (NGEN) CNG powered vehicles offer lower fuel costs and reduced noise pollution. And they are six times cleaner burning and do not require foreign oil.
