McNeilus Companies delivered 15 McNeilus® Standard ready-mix trucks to Ferrara Bros. All are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).

DODGE CENTER, Minn. (August 5, 2013) – McNeilus Companies, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, has delivered 15 McNeilus® Standard ready-mix trucks to Ferrara Bros. Building Materials Corp. of Flushing, New York. The vehicles feature Cummins Westport ISL-G compressed natural gas (CNG) engines, and are configured on a single pusher axle with a gross vehicle weight of 80,000 pounds.

“Our fleet is comprised of 75 mixers, and now 17 are powered by compressed natural gas; we’ve got a ways to go but we intend to become a 100% CNG fleet,” said Bob Gartman, Ferrara Bros. vice president of operations.

“Ferrara is making the move to CNG because we firmly believe in reducing our country’s dependence on foreign oil. And we’ve had a very good experience with McNeilus and its CNG configuration.”

“We’re seeing a growing number of progressive ready-mix producers, such as Ferrara Bros., transition to CNG powered vehicles,” said Tom Harris, McNeilus Companies vice president of fleet sales. “From significantly reduced fuel costs to far quieter operation, the advantages to our customers are significant – and the trend to CNG is accelerating.”

McNeilus has been producing alternative fueled CNG powered vehicles since 2006. The company built its own CNG fueling station on-site to fully fuel and test vehicles prior to shipment. By working closely with all chassis manufacturers and Cummins-Westport, McNeilus ensures that its technology benefits the environment, reduces dependence on foreign oil and, most importantly, improves customers’ productivity and profits.

“Since the McNeilus CNG configured trucks are inherently cleaner running, they require fewer engine emission control systems; we’ve found them to be more reliable than diesel engines – especially in a stop-and-start urban setting,” added Gartman. “Plus, they are smooth running and very quiet.  We get requests from contractors to deliver ready-mix from the CNG trucks because of how quiet and clean they are. That says a lot.”

The McNeilus Standard mixer system has a well-earned reputation for durability and low maintenance. The legendary drum is made from abrasion-resistant steel with robotic welding for long life and maximum payload. The drum fins feature a pair of 3/8-inch carbon steel wear rods to deflect the concrete away from high wear areas for increased life and productivity. Pyles Concrete and Oshkosh S-Series Vehicles Help Complete Massive Wolf Creek Dam Remediation Project

Oshkosh S-Series

Over the course of four years, Oshkosh® S-Series™ forward placement concrete mixer trucks spent many months running 24 hours per day, six days per week on the Wolf Creek Dam Remediation project.

DODGE CENTER, Minn. (April 19, 2013) – McNeilus Companies, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, attended a ceremonial concrete placement event on April 19 to celebrate the completion of the Wolf Creek Dam Remediation project in Jamestown, Kentucky. Altogether, nearly 300,000 cubic yards of concrete was placed in constructing the entire barrier wall and work platform. Pyles Concrete of Columbia, Kentucky used Oshkosh® S-Series™ trucks, each with an 11 cubic yard capacity, to deliver and place every single yard.

The Wolf Creek Dam Remediation project includes 1,197 piles that are each approximately four feet in diameter and extend 275 feet into bedrock below the foundation of the dam’s 4,000-foot long embankment.

“The logistical challenges on this project were formidable but, together with the Corp of Engineers and very experienced contractors, we made a great team,” said Doug Pyles, president of Pyles Concrete. “We had 24 Oshkosh S-Series in our fleet during the project, and many months the trucks were running 24 hours per day, six days a week, for four years. The S-Series vehicles were incredibly reliable; we purchased four new when the job began and the rest came from our existing fleet.”

In addition, Concrete batch plant manufacturer, CON-E-CO (also part of the Oshkosh Commercial Group), played an important role on the project. Its LO-PRO® portable batch plant was located near the site and mixed all of the concrete used at Wolf Creek Dam Remediation project.

The Oshkosh S-Series is a leading brand of forward placement concrete mixers in America. Among its many noteworthy features are the renowned McNeilus mixer drum, an Oshkosh transfer case and proprietary axles (developed for military vehicles), an ergonomic cab optimized for unsurpassed visibility and easier troubleshooting, and a patented Load Span Tag Axle (LSTA) for a smoother ride and a 22-inch axle lift.

“Lake Cumberland is the most famous feature of South Central Kentucky, so we were very proud to have been a part of this project,” added Pyles.  “The stakes were pretty high, as well, with Nashville being downstream of the dam and the possibility of the dam failing before the repair work could be finished.”

Wolf Creek Dam is on the Cumberland River in south central Kentucky. The lake’s huge water storage capability provides downstream communities with important flood risk reduction. The dam’s water resources also provide commercial navigation, water supply, water quality, hydropower, and environmental benefits.

Founded in 1975, Pyles Concrete, Inc. is a full service provider of quality ready-mixed concrete in South Central Kentucky. The company operates five batch plants located in Columbia, Edmonton, Liberty, Russell Springs and Somerset, and runs a fleet of 35 ready-mixed concrete trucks.

McNeilus Trucks Assist with Hurricane Sandy Cleanup

With the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, there has been a greater need for removing refuse. Waste haulers extended eight-hour work shifts to 12-hour shifts to accommodate the cleanup. Landfills and transfer stations stayed open later.

The increase in trash translated to an additional 100 tons pushing through daily at the transfer stations. Locations extended their hours to include Sunday. One of those haulers included Blue Diamond Disposal, a customer of McNeilus Companies.

Blue Diamond Disposal is located in Mt. Arlington and Woodbine, New Jersey and locally owned by John Shortino. Blue Diamond currently runs approximately 100 pieces of equipment. New Jersey had been labeled as “Ground Zero” as far as the mass destruction and flooding is concerned after Hurricane Sandy left its mark on the Mid Atlantic coastal states.

Blue Diamond Disposal cleaned up many towns including Ocean City, New Jersey, a family resort town. They were able to clean up the streets full of entire households that were devastated by flood waters reaching as high as 3-4 feet depending on how far inland the houses were located. We are happy to be able to assist those impacted by Hurricane Sandy in this small way.
