McNeilus Announces First Order of Fully Integrated Electric RCVs with Republic Services
McNeilus will build 50 of its Volterra ZSL zero emission refuse collection vehicles for Republic Services, with delivery planned in 2024.
Dodge Center, MN. (Sept. 25, 2023) – McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) company, has received the first order from Republic Services for its fully integrated McNeilus® Volterra™ ZSL™ electric refuse collection vehicle and will initially build 50 vehicles for them, with delivery starting in June 2024. The deal more than doubles the number of electric refuse collection vehicles from any manufacturer operating in the field today.
The purpose-built electric refuse collection vehicle (eRCV) will be produced in a new, state-of-the-art facility in Murfreesboro, Tenn., with the compaction assemblies manufactured at McNeilus headquarters in Minnesota.
The McNeilus® Volterra™ ZSL™ product is certified zero emission by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), providing a solution to haulers looking to move toward more sustainable operations and meet clean fleet goals. The CARB certifications also satisfy the zero-emissions vehicle reporting requirements needed to comply with Advanced Clean Truck regulations now in effect in eight states.
“As the operator of one of the nation’s largest fleets, Republic Services is uniquely positioned to advance decarbonization through our commitment to electrification. We are leading the industry with the first McNeilus order and on track for half of our new truck purchases to be electric by 2028. We believe these electric vehicles will benefit our drivers through advanced safety and ergonomic features, and benefit the communities we serve through reduced emissions and quieter operation.”
Brett Rogers, Republic Services vice president of operations technology
Republic Services provided valuable insights to McNeilus’ engineering team regarding operational, safety and ergonomic features for the vehicle. The McNeilus Volterra ZSL is designed from the ground up to offer customers like Republic Services a single OEM electric vehicle solution. All systems and functions are designed to work together and purpose-built for tough refuse collection environments – from the compaction components to the battery management system to the on-board telematics and active safety systems. The fully integrated custom cab and chassis set the Volterra ZSL eRCV apart from all other refuse vehicles, which require the mounting of a refuse body to a third-party chassis.
“We are proving the value in this first-of-its kind fully integrated, electric refuse collection vehicle, and we are pleased to partner with Republic Services on this first order,” said Lee Dreas, vice president and general manager, McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing. “McNeilus is committed to electrification and other innovations to advance sustainability initiatives in communities across the country and more Volterra ZSL orders with other customers are in the pipeline.”
Lee Dreas, vice president and general manager, McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing
McNeilus leaned on its expertise in refuse collection bodies and partnered with parent company Oshkosh Corporation and its nearly 30 years of electrification experience to bring this latest refuse vehicle to market. The Volterra ZSL zero emission RCV features 38% more space in the cab compared to the industry average, plus a sophisticated drivetrain that includes advanced lithium-ion batteries and a revolutionary electric-axle system. It will perform a full day’s refuse collection route on a single charge and is designed to minimize environmental impact and reduce noise in communities across the country, while helping customers meet their sustainability initiatives.
The ergonomically designed cab incorporates a series of features and components to optimize comfort and safety including a Direct Vision Standard 5-star rating for visibility, as well as a 360-degree camera and radar system to provide enhanced visibility. Easy, consistent operation is delivered in part through Oshkosh’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which are offered as standard equipment and provide complete vehicle coverage. Other features include a 15-inch step height for ease of getting in and out of the cab, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with integrated controls, an aligned driver workspace, heated and ventilated seats, integrated operator controls in the seat, automated full-length sun shade, a 15-inch touchscreen and 12-inch cluster displays for streamlined controls, and enhanced storage areas.

McNeilus® Volterra™ ZSL™ Refuse Vehicle Certified Zero Emission by Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board
Dodge Center, Minn. (July 20, 2023) – McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing, Inc. announces its Volterra™ ZSL™, a fully integrated, zero emission electric refuse collection vehicle, has earned three certifications from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB).
The McNeilus® Volterra™ ZSL™ refuse collection vehicle (RCV) is built from the ground up by McNeilus and parent company Oshkosh Corporation, bringing together Oshkosh’s experience in severe duty vehicle innovation and McNeilus expertise in refuse collection bodies. It was skillfully engineered with technologies and design features covered by more than 50 patents and patent applications. Now this product adds the EPA Heavy Duty Greenhouse Gas Certificate of Conformity, CARB Heavy Duty Greenhouse Gas Executive Order, and the CARB Zero Emissions Powertrain Executive Order to its list of advantages.
“The EPA and CARB certifications mark a major milestone in the development of the McNeilus Volterra ZSL refuse vehicle because they provide objective third party evaluations of its design and zero-emission capabilities,” said Lee Dreas, vice president and general manager, McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing. “These certifications are the result of a rigorous review process to confirm we have met a very high standard in electric vehicle technology. With the certified zero-emission Volterra ZSL product, we’re also providing customers a solution to help achieve their sustainability goals and meet EV requirements.”
The EPA certificate signifies the Volterra ZSL electric refuse vehicle conforms with Phase 2 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Medium- and Heavy Duty Engines and Vehicles. In addition, CARB approvals provide written documentation of compliance with CARB regulations pertaining to greenhouse gas emissions and zero emissions for heavy duty powertrains.
CARB recently announced the Advanced Clean Fleets rule, which says refuse vehicle fleets across the state of California must transition to zero emissions by 2040. To support fleet owners with this change, the state offers a variety of purchase incentive programs such as the Hybrid and Zero Emissions Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP). By receiving these CARB certifications, the Volterra ZSL refuse vehicle is eligible for purchase vouchers in state incentive programs such as the New Jersey Zero-Emission Inventive Program (NJ ZIP) or California’s Hybrid and Zero-Emissions Voucher Inventive Project (HVIP). When listed in the California HVIP catalog, for example, the Volterra ZSL may become eligible for purchase vouchers up to $120,000 per truck.
The CARB certifications also satisfy the zero-emissions vehicle reporting requirements necessary for compliance with the Advanced Clean Truck regulations now in effect in eight states.
The purpose-built Volterra ZSL RCV incorporates advanced technology and innovative design to deliver game-changing solutions in driver comfort and safety, total cost of ownership, productivity, serviceability, and sustainability. This product meets or exceeds clean energy mandates and the battery management system is optimized for refuse collection, enabling all-day route collection on a single charge. Other features include a revolutionary e-axle architecture with a B10-rating of 300,000 miles, plus cooperative regenerative braking and battery preconditioning for outstanding range and compaction.
The McNeilus Volterra ZSL, a fully integrated zero-emission electric refuse collection vehicle, is being produced in a new, state-of-the-art facility in Murfreesboro, Tenn., with the compaction assemblies manufactured at McNeilus headquarters in Minnesota. McNeilus Highlights Exclusive ePTO Technology and Sustainability Partnership with SSAB Fossil-free Steel
Industry leading refuse collection electrification and sustainability innovation is on display in the McNeilus booth (#2429) at Waste Expo in New Orleans.
New Orleans, La. (May 2, 2023) – McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing, Inc. will demonstrate its commitment to electrification and sustainability by spotlighting its advanced electric power takeoff (ePTO) technology and its partnership with fossil-free steel manufacturer SSAB at Waste Expo 2023 in New Orleans.
McNeilus® ePTO technology provides a unique self-contained system that is optimized and dedicated to powering refuse collection functions for consistent, efficient performance – no matter the electric chassis brand. This exclusive technology will be featured in booth #2429 on the McNeilus® Extra Compaction Rear Loader.
“McNeilus, with our parent company Oshkosh Corporation, are unique in the level of talent, technology, and experience that can be called upon to build electrification solutions that are purpose built to optimize performance and sustainability in refuse collection,” said Derek Wente, ePTO project engineer, McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing. “We developed our ePTO technology with a laser focus on delivering the high standards of performance, serviceability, durability and manufacturability that customers have come to expect from McNeilus.”
McNeilus ePTO technology was designed with the operator and service technician in mind. It provides numerous benefits including common component placement, most notably the high-voltage disconnect, and consistent service parts across product models allowing for simplified troubleshooting, diagnostics and maintenance, and a safe environment for technicians. The common controls and placement in the cab across product models provides operator assurance, streamlined training and enhanced efficiency. The electric pump and motor configuration eliminates noise pollution and provides quiet operation during early morning routes in residential neighborhoods.
McNeilus ePTO refuse collection vehicles meet requirements for zero-emission laws and enables customers to meet environmental and sustainability goals. The ePTO Rear Loader on display at Waste Expo is made with SSAB Fossil-free steel, making it the first vehicle to be manufactured with this zero carbon emission steel as part of a partnership announced last September to provide sustainable steel products for McNeilus refuse collection vehicle manufacturing.
“We are proud to be able to showcase results from our fossil-free steel partnership with Oshkosh and McNeilus as we now present the McNeilus ePTO Rear Loader at Waste Expo,” said Thomas Hörnfeldt, Head of Sustainable Business at SSAB. “We see an increasing demand for steel without CO2-emissions from our customers and look forward to continuing our journey to reduce carbon footprints across the value chain.”
In addition to McNeilus ePTO technology, North America’s first fully-integrated, zero-emission electric refuse collection vehicle (RCV), engineered and produced by Oshkosh Corporation, will be showcased by McNeilus at Waste Expo. The new vehicle delivers on sustainability goals, meets or exceeds clean energy mandates, qualifies for EV incentives, and completes a typical all-day refuse collection route on a single charge. Its 494 kWh battery comes with an 8-year warranty and an expected life of 12 to 14 years.
“At McNeilus and Oshkosh, we are unsurpassed in industry knowledge, resources and commitment to push the boundaries of the market and give our customers what they need,” said Jeremy Bernard, senior director of business development for McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing. “McNeilus ePTO technology and the Oshkosh integrated, electric refuse collection vehicle are built to drive performance and sustainability in the refuse collection industry for years to come.”

These eRCV innovations are the latest in a rapidly-growing family of electric refuse technologies, which are collectively protected by more than 100 patents and patent applications.
“Bringing together Oshkosh’s experience in severe duty vehicle innovation and McNeilus expertise in refuse collection vehicle bodies, this new product platform will provide the best driver, technician and owner experience,” said Lee Dreas, vice president and general manager at McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing. “Every aspect is unified, creating a vehicle that sets new standards of excellence. We look forward to showcasing this at Waste Expo and talking with customers about how it can take their business to the next level.”
Features and components of the Oshkosh fully integrated zero-emission electric refuse collection vehicle deliver numerous benefits across multiple categories.
Driver-first design
The ergonomically designed pass-through cab incorporates a series of features and components to optimize comfort and safety including a Direct Vision Standard 5-star rating for visibility, as well as a 360-degree camera and radar system to provide enhanced visibility. Easy, consistent operation is delivered in part through Oshkosh’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which are offered as standard equipment and provide complete vehicle coverage. Other features include a 15-inch step height for ease of getting in and out of the cab, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with integrated controls, an aligned driver workspace, heated and ventilated seats, integrated operator controls in the seat, automated full-length sun shade, a 15-inch touchscreen and 12-inch cluster displays for streamlined controls, enhanced storage areas, plus 38% more space in the cab compared to the industry average, and vibration limits below the ISO standard.
Total cost of ownership
Simplified maintenance and parts inventory, operational efficiency, strong productivity, and extended service life all help contribute to improving total cost of ownership by up to an estimated 14%. Other key contributing factors include connected, intelligent telematics providing condition-based and predictive maintenance, tire pressure monitoring system, regenerative braking, battery preconditioning and more.
Performance and productivity
The design of the compaction unit is based on the proven performance and design of the McNeilus® Zero Radius™ Automated Side Loader. The vehicle’s zero radius lift arm – available in 6-foot or 12-foot reach, combined with a tight vehicle turning radius of up to 67 feet (depending on configuration) allow drivers to collect refuse without leaving the cab and to maneuver around cul-de-sacs and tight corners with ease. Additionally, integrated telematics systems provide data on fleet performance, route management, battery management system status and more for optimal operation.
Serviceability
Strategic placement of key serviceable components provides accessibility from the ground with no climbing or lifting equipment required and allows convenient daily checks and services. The Zero Radius lift arm’s rebuildable grabber assembly also enables easy replacement of high-wear items for optimal service life.
Sustainability
The purpose-built Oshkosh fully integrated zero-emission electric refuse collection vehicle helps deliver on customer sustainability goals. This vehicle meets or exceeds clean energy mandates and qualifies for EV incentives. The battery management system is optimized for refuse collection and enables all-day route collection on a single charge. Oshkosh Corporation Creates New Product Category with North America’s First Fully Integrated, Zero-Emission Electric Refuse Collection Vehicle
Innovation and environmental stewardship spur cutting-edge, purpose-built solution
OSHKOSH, Wis. (Feb. 21, 2023) – Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), a leading innovator of purpose-built vehicles and equipment, is pleased to announce that it has engineered and produced North America’s first fully integrated, electric refuse collection vehicle, creating a new category and bringing advanced technology to the refuse industry.
Traditional refuse vehicles require the mounting of a refuse collection body to a third-party chassis. The new Oshkosh integrated refuse collector has been designed from the ground up to offer customers a single OEM electric vehicle (EV) solution.
“Entry into new product categories is a crucial element of our “Innovate. Serve. Advance.” growth strategy. With a deep heritage in the design and manufacture of purpose-built, heavy-duty trucks coupled with field proven refuse body technology, Oshkosh is uniquely positioned to develop this integrated vehicle. Our vast innovation capabilities are evident in every aspect of this first-of-its-kind product.”
John Pfeifer, president and chief executive officer of Oshkosh Corporation
Oshkosh leaned into its nearly 30-years of electrification expertise to bring its latest vehicle to market. This electrified refuse collector features a sophisticated drivetrain that includes advanced lithium-ion batteries and a revolutionary electric-axle system. The vehicle will enable a full day’s refuse collection on a single charge with zero emissions. It was designed to minimize environmental impact and reduce noise in communities around the world, while helping customers meet their sustainability initiatives.

For the driver, active safety systems, performance technologies and ergonomic features deliver best in class safety, comfort and productivity. And for the technician, intelligent, connected systems reduce routine service and enable condition-based maintenance.”
Manufacturing of Oshkosh’s integrated, electric refuse collection vehicle will leverage several Oshkosh facilities, including a new, state-of-the-art plant in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Product prototype testing on designated routes will be completed in 2023, with customer deliveries starting in 2024.
